Practical Information
Currency & Payment Methods
Cape Breton Island uses the Canadian dollar (CAD). Most businesses, including shops, restaurants, and accommodations, accept major credit cards such as Visa, Mastercard, and American Express, as well as debit cards. Contactless payment options like Apple Pay and Google Pay are also becoming more widely available.
Cash is accepted throughout the Island and some rural or seasonal businesses may prefer it. ATMs are available in most towns and larger communities if you need to withdraw cash. Currency exchange services are limited, so it is a good idea to convert foreign currency before arrival or at a major bank.
