Skyline Trail 101

An insider’s guide to the busiest trail in Cape Breton Highlands National Park

Perched high above the Cabot Trail, the Skyline Trail offers a view that feels like the edge of the world–where the mountains meet the sea and the sky stretches endlessly. It is without a doubt a must-see destination, but as social media fuels the desire to capture its beauty, the growing crowds are making it harder to experience it firsthand.

From June 26 to October 25, 2026, parking access is managed through a reservation system, helping to reduce congestion and protect the trail while improving the visitor experience.

The Skyline Trail’s fragile ecosystem is at risk; heavy foot traffic, off-trail wandering, and an overabundance of moose have been reshaping this landscape. To protect this breathtaking place, we must tread lightly. Visit during blue and golden hours, or better yet, join a Parks Canada guided Skyline Sunset Hike to witness the trail’s magic while learning how to protect it for generations to come.

Skyline Trail parking reservations will be required during the 2026 peak season.

A new parking reservation system will be in place from June 26 to October 25, 2026.

To ensure a safe and enjoyable visit, visitors must plan ahead and secure a parking reservation in advance. Once all parking reservations are booked, there is no access to the trail during that time. Visitors are strongly encouraged to book their parking reservation online or by phone before arriving to guarantee entry and avoid disappointment.

Reservations launch May 6, 2026, at 8 a.m. ET / 9 a.m. AT for Skyline Trail parking, required from June 26 to October 25, 2026.

Plan ahead and secure your spot early!

When to visit

Visitation is highest on weekends and holidays, and advance planning is strongly recommended. From November to May, parking reservations are not required. This quieter period still offers a rewarding Skyline Trail experience, though visitors should note that services are limited. Visitor services are available from mid-May through October 25, 2026.

What are the time slots?

Regular Parking:

  • 8:00 am - 12:00 pm
  • 9:00 am - 1:00 pm
  • 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm
  • 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm
  • 4:00 pm – 8:00 pm
  • 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm

When booking your parking reservation, you’ll choose from a four-hour window that best fits your schedule. This gives you plenty of time to arrive, prepare, and begin your hike. Visitors may check-in within the first hour into their reserved timeslot but should arrive no earlier than 10 minutes before their reservation.

Time slot arrivals help space out visitation throughout the day, creating a more relaxed experience. Parking reservations can be made up until 30 minutes past the start of a time slot.

Skyline throughout the seasons

Spring: As the Highlands awaken, the Skyline Trail comes to life with crisp air, budding greenery, and fewer crowds. However, snow may still linger on the plateau, so be prepared for all weather conditions. Expect cool temperatures, occasional muddy patches, and wildlife emerging from the forest. Layers and sturdy footwear are essential!

Summer: Long days bring warm breezes and breathtaking sunsets over the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The boardwalk lookout is a prime spot for whale watching, and the Skyline Trail remains one of the most popular experiences in the park.

From June 26 to October 25, 2026, a parking reservation is required to visit the Skyline Trail during peak hours. Plan ahead and book your time slot in advance to secure your visit.

Fall: Cooler air and vibrant colours make fall one of the most sought-after times to hike the Skyline Trail. Wildlife sightings are common, and the trail continues to see high visitation throughout the season.

A parking reservation is required from June 26 to October 25, 2026. Booking ahead is strongly recommended, as availability can be limited. Dress in layers and enjoy one of Cape Breton’s most iconic seasonal experiences.

Winter: With the arrival of winter, Skyline Trail transforms into a serene, snow-covered wonderland. Snowshoes or crampons are essential, and strong winds can make conditions unpredictable. To protect fragile ecosystems, visitors must remain on the boardwalk at all times. If you're unfamiliar with the trail, a GPS is highly recommended. Keep in mind that the parking lot will not be plowed so, be prepared to park further away and add extra distance to your hike. For those ready to embrace the elements, the reward is absolute tranquility and breathtaking winter vistas.

For your safety, please be aware that visitor services are unavailable from November to mid-May in Cape Breton Highlands National Park. Winter conditions can be unpredictable—plan ahead, dress appropriately, and be prepared to navigate the park at your own risk.
