About
Join us for a mini moccasin keychain workshop with Char Lafford.
Charlene Bernard-Lafford is a Mi’kmaw artist, maker, and cultural practitioner whose work is deeply rooted in traditional arts and community knowledge-sharing. A devoted mother and wife, she has spent many years creating handmade work using hide, leather, beads, and quills, and has also crafted regalia over the years.
While much of her artistic practice is self-taught, Charlene has also been honoured to learn from respected Elders and family members. She learned quill basket-making from the late Sandra Simon, moccasin-making from her late Aunt Judy Ann Googoo, hand drum-making from her late Aunt Sylvia Googoo, and basket-making from the late “Dr. Granny” during camp days many years ago.
Charlene believes strongly in passing traditional knowledge on to future generations and encourages lifelong learning through craft and culture. At 51 years young, she continues to explore and learn new skills herself. She is also a member of Lone Feather, a family drum group that includes her husband, children, and brothers. Together, they have travelled throughout the Atlantic provinces, sharing songs and drumming at powwows and cultural gatherings.
