A Ceilidh Every Night of the Week

Every night of the week, there's a céilidh happening somewhere on the Island. This October, that everyday tradition builds toward one of the biggest celebrations of the season: Celtic Colours International Festival, marking its 30th year.

• Sundays, Judique: Sunday Ceilidhs at the Celtic Music Interpretive Centre, 2–5 pm. Runs all October (Oct 4, 11, 18, 25).
• Nightly, Baddeck: Baddeck Gathering Céilidh, 7:30–9:30 pm. A kitchen party open to all, June through mid-October.
• Thursdays, Inverness: Thursday Céilidh Sessions, running into December.
• Ongoing, Iona: The Frolic’n Folk Pub & Grill pairs comfort food with live trad music overlooking the Bras d'Or Lake.
• Tuesdays, Port Hawkesbury: Ceilidh at the Civic Centre, wrapping up right at the start of October.

Celtic Colours Turns 30

Celtic Colours International Festival runs October 9 to 17 this year, bringing Gaelic, Mi'kmaw and Acadian music, dance and storytelling to venues across the Island. From places like town theatres to small rural churches, all set against the fall colours.

Here are some of the events built around the festival week:

• Buddy MacMaster School of Fiddle (Oct 9–17, Judique)
• Weaving Our Tales (Oct 13, Chéticamp), a community storytelling event
• Guided hikes: Acadian Trail (Oct 12), Corney Brook (Oct 13), Aspy Trail (Oct 14), Warren Lake (Oct 15), Franey Trail (Oct 16)
• Pumpkin carving: Chéticamp (Oct 11) and Ingonish (Oct 15)

Halloween & Fall Traditions

Not yet on our event calendar, so these link to the organizers for now:

• Huckle Buckle Festival (mid-October, Ingonish): a community-run festival. Guided hikes, food, céilidhs and a pumpkin walk at Freshwater Lake. 
• Parks Canada’s fall programs - Cape Breton Highlands National Park keeps its interpretive programming going in the fall, giving visitors a few more good reasons to slow down as the season turns.
• Oidhche nam Bòcan (Night of the Spirits) (Oct 23–24, Iona): Highland Village Museum's lamplit Halloween tour, storytelling and céilidh.
• Sinister Soirée (Oct 24, Louisbourg): a 19+ costumed night at the Fortress with live music, a haunted walk and tarot readings.

Taste the Trail: Cabot Trail Food Truck Rally

Autumn on Cape Breton Island means golden hills, crisp air and coastal views at their best, and the Cabot Trail Food Truck Rally is built around exactly that. Over two days, food trucks set up at scenic stops along the Cabot Trail, giving visitors a reason to eat some amazing food and take in the fall colours before moving on to the next stop.

The details:

• When: October 25 and 26, 10 am to 4 pm both days
• Where: Scenic stops all along the Cabot Trail
• Contest: Download our Visit Cape Breton app, scan the QR code at each truck when you buy, and collect stamps toward entries in the Gourmet Getaway Contest, a prize package that includes two nights at the Sally’s Brook Eco-Luxury Resort, a dining experience for two and a $250 Visa gift card
• Good to know: Some trucks are cash only, so it's worth bringing some along

October on Cape Breton Island moves at two speeds at once, the everyday céilidh you find by chance and the marquee concerts and community events of Celtic Colours drawing people in from around the world. Add in food trucks along the Cabot Trail, pumpkin carving, guided hikes and a few good frights toward Halloween, and the month is full from start to finish. However you spend it, the Island's music and stories are never far away. Come see for yourself, and take your time doing it.
