Travel and Activities in Woods Restricted

Due to very dry conditions, the Government of Nova Scotia is enforcing temporary restrictions starting at 4 pm on Tuesday, August 5th. Hiking, fishing and the use of vehicles in the woods are not permitted. Violating these rules can lead to fines of up to $25,000.
These precautions help protect our forests and communities for future generations. But take heart, Cape Breton Island still offers so many ways to enjoy your visit while respecting the restrictions.
What You Can Still Do on Cape Breton Island

Paddling and Water Activities
Get up close and personal with Cape Breton Island’s waters, where every stroke brings a new view, a rush of peace or a spark of adventure. Glide across sheltered lakes and dramatic shores on a stand-up paddleboard, or let your kayak carry you alongside majestic cliff formations, following its path toward hidden coves and inlets. Tube down the gentle current of the world-famous Margaree River with friends for a more laid-back ride. Or join a guided kayak tour for an intimate exploration led by someone who knows these waters best.

Attend Festivals and Events
The Island’s culture comes alive at festivals and community events throughout the year. From live music and dance to artisan markets and culinary celebrations, there’s always something happening. Check local event listings to see what’s on during your visit.

Explore Scenic Drives and Coastal Villages
Take a drive along the Cabot Trail for dramatic highland views and endless ocean horizons. Stop in charming fishing communities, wander along sandy beaches or head out on a sailing or kayaking adventure, all great ways to explore without entering restricted wooded areas.

Discover History and Culture
Step into Cape Breton’s rich heritage at museums, historic sites and cultural centres across the Island. Experience Mi’kmaq traditions, Acadian hospitality and Gaelic music that echo through our communities.

Savour Local Flavours
From casual seaside bites to fine dining experiences, Cape Breton Island’s culinary scene is unforgettable. Enjoy freshly caught seafood, local brews and sweet treats that capture the essence of Island living.

Go to the Beach
Swim in the warm Gulf of St. Lawrence or surf the waves of the Atlantic Ocean. From quiet coves to the calm shores of the Bras d’Or Lake, Cape Breton has a beach for every mood. Whether collecting sea glass or catching a sunset, the coastline always delivers.

Play World-Class Golf
Cape Breton is home to some of Canada’s most celebrated golf destinations, offering sweeping coastal views and challenging layouts. Whether you’re a seasoned golfer or just starting out, you’ll find unforgettable fairways and packages to help plan your perfect golf getaway.

Camp in Designated Campgrounds
Camping is still permitted in designated campgrounds where safety measures are in place. Please note that open fires are not allowed during wildfire restrictions, use approved cooking equipment instead and follow all site rules.
Why These Restrictions Matter
Wildfire prevention is everyone’s responsibility. By respecting the restrictions, you’re helping protect forests, wildlife and communities across Nova Scotia. Your cooperation makes a real difference.
