Everything You Need to Know About Waterfall Season on Cape Breton Island

Spring is one of the most beautiful times to explore Cape Breton Island. As the snow melts and the spring rains arrive, rivers and streams come rushing back to life. Across the Island, waterfalls grow stronger and louder, tumbling through forests and over rocky cliffs.
To celebrate this incredible time of year, Cape Breton Island hosts Waterfall Season, a four-week adventure filled with hiking, music, culture and plenty of waterfall chasing.
Here’s what you need to know before you start exploring.

What is Waterfall Season?
Waterfall Season runs from May 15 to June 15 on Cape Breton Island.
During these four weeks, visitors and locals are invited to discover 19 featured waterfalls across the Island. Some are quick and easy stops just off the road, some are a short hike and others can be full-day hikes through the woods. There’s a waterfall for every type of adventurer.
Use our brand-new Visit Cape Breton Island app to scan the QR codes found on Waterfall Season signs at the waterfalls. Scan three codes and you'll be automatically entered into our Waterfall Season Challenge Contest (prize details below). Every extra waterfall that you discover and scan gives you another entry into the contest!
Don't have the app yet? Download it free on the App Store or Google Play before you head out on the trails. Once it's installed, log in and create your account while you're still on Wi-Fi this — keeps things running smoothly in areas of the Island where service can be spotty — and be sure to enable Location Services so the app can guide you to all 17 stunning waterfalls. When you're ready to explore, tap on Passports to find the Waterfall Season passport and unlock mini challenges along the way. At each falls, look for the official QR code on the Waterfall Season sign, give it a scan and watch your entries stack up.

Island-Wide Waterfall Weekend
Waterfall Season begins with Island-Wide Waterfall Weekend on May 16, a celebration that kicks off the adventure across Cape Breton Island.
Join our friends and us as we have group hikes to our waterfalls. Cape Breton Island ambassadors will be hiking to various waterfalls throughout the day, and you’re welcome to join in on the adventures!
After the hikes are finished, we make our way to the Big Summer Splash at Big Spruce Brewing, featuring live music from Mary Frances Leahy! It’s a great way to start the season with live music, local craft beer and the energy of spring in the air.
All weekend long, visitors can explore waterfalls, join hikes and connect with others who love the outdoors.

The Weekly Mini Challenges
Throughout Waterfall Season, visitors can take part in four weekly mini challenges designed to help them discover new places across the Island.
Each week features a selection of waterfalls from the full list of 19. Visit them, scan the QR code and share your adventure. It’s a fun way to explore the Island while taking in some of its most beautiful natural spots.

Weekly Events Across the Island
Waterfall Season is about more than waterfalls. Each week offers opportunities to slow down, learn something new and connect with nature.
Visitors can take part in guided waterfall hikes, explore the woods on medicine walks and enjoy live concerts in unique settings around the Island.
These events bring together outdoor adventure, culture and community, making Waterfall Season a truly special time to visit.

A Taste of Waterfall Season
No Cape Breton Island experience is complete without something local to sip along the way.
Destination Cape Breton has teamed up with Big Spruce Brewing to create Oh Chute!, a Waterfall Season-inspired beer brewed right here on the Island. It’s a fun nod to the season and the perfect way to celebrate after a day of chasing waterfalls.
You can try Oh Chute! at Big Spruce Brewing and select locations during Waterfall Season and year-round at the Nova Scotia Liquor Commission.

The Secret Waterfall Challenge
For those who love a little mystery, Waterfall Season also features a Secret Waterfall Challenge.
Clues are shared throughout the season, leading you to a hidden waterfall somewhere on Cape Breton Island. It’s a fun way to explore off the beaten path and see a side of the Island that many visitors never find.
Solve the clues, find the waterfall and share your discovery to take part in the challenge.

The Waterfall Season Challenge Grand Prize
Everyone who takes part in the Waterfall Challenge will have the chance to win a memorable Cape Breton Island getaway.
The grand prize includes two nights at La Pointe Chalets and dinner for two at Table Doucet.
It’s the perfect way to relax after a few weeks of exploring waterfalls across the Island.
