North Highlands

Just north of the Cabot Trail is a beautiful corner of Cape Breton Island filled with rugged coast lines, mountains that plunge to the sea and some of the Island's most colourful characters. It may be one of Cape Breton's best kept secrets and no visit to Cape Breton is complete without a trip up to the North Highlands.

Incredible Coastlines

When you start your journey north of the Cabot Trail you're always surrounded by incredible coastlines. The North Mountain range splits this area in two, on the southern side there's Aspy Bay and on the northern side is Bay St. Lawrence. Seeing the North Mountains plunge into the ocean makes for some of the most dramatic coastlines on the Island. Where there are a few incredible hikes that feature great views you HAVE to see them by boat!

Hikes for Days

The communities in the North Highlands are pretty small but their charm is undeniable. These small communities are rich in experiences and great food! When you're in Meat Cove you have to try Lawless Lobster Food Truck, you can't beat their lobster roll, especially when you pair it with the views! If you want to hike, this is the place you need to visit. This area is home to so many great hikes: Money Point, The Kauzmann Trail, Tenerife Mountain, Wilkie-Sugarloaf Mountain, Meat Cove Mountain and will be home to the Jajiktek/Seawall Trail!

Not just for Land Lubbers

If you're looking to get your sea legs while on the Island reach out to Northern Tip Charters for a tour around the coast or check out Oshan Whale watching and be amazed by the whales that inhabit the area. You may see pilot whales, humpback whales and minkes!
