On the western shore of the Bras d’Or Lake, Marble Mountain Beach is one of the Island’s genuine surprises: a stretch of white sand and clear turquoise water that looks more Caribbean than Cape Breton Island.
The colour is a leftover from industry. Quarrying began here in 1869 and the crushed marble that washed into the lake built the beach grain by grain. The same stone keeps the water soft and clear, and it still helps buffer the Bras d’Or against acid rain.
Come for a swim, walk the shoreline below the old quarry walls, or launch a boat from the community wharf. It is a place worth slowing down for.
