Deanne Fitzpatrick Rug Hooking Exhibition- Holding up the Moon

About

The J Franklin Wright Gallery is pleased to present Deanne Fitzpatrick’s Exhibition, “Holding up the Moon”, September 25 – November 6, 2026. In this exhibition, Deanne explores her relationship with responsibility, aging, and self-understanding. “I look closely at who I feel I need to be and what I believe I must do, and contrast that with what is actually required of me. This is a story many women share. I explore these ideas by hooking each image one loop at a time, discovering along the way that my own expectations often stand in contrast to what others truly expect or need from me. More often than not, it is my self-imposed expectations that create unrest and dissatisfaction. I know I am not truly holding up the moon, yet at times, I still feel as though I must. This exhibition is about releasing self-expectation, softening that burden, and keeping my feet firmly on the ground.” Deanne Fitzpatrick is a renowned artist and writer who believes that rug hooking and creativity deepens and enriches lives. She has exhibited widely including two solo exhibits at The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. Deanne has written eight books, received an honorary doctorate from Mount Saint Vincent University and was awarded The Order of Canada for her contribution to the advancement of rug hooking as an art form. "Rug hooking is full of possibilities. It has changed my life, and been a powerful force in changing the lives of the people I have met through it over these 30 years. It has made me who I am. I started out as a therapist, thinking that was how I would spend my life helping people, but rug hooking found me and helped me find myself."
