7 Drive-Up Snowmobile Accommodations

After a day on the Highland trails, the last thing you want is a long trailer haul to your bed. On Cape Breton Island, you don't need one. From wilderness cabins with wood stoves to lakeside resorts with hot tubs, plenty of places to stay sit close to the trail system, so you can ride in, warm up and head out again in the morning. Here are seven stays riders love, plus a bonus pick for a few days off the sled. Choose one or two as your home base, plan a few days and let the snow decide where you ride next.

Set on the shore of the Bras d'Or Lake in Whycocomagh, these cottages are a short ride from the SANS trail system. Each suite has a full kitchen, whirlpool tub and electric fireplace, and the main lodge has a floor-to-ceiling wood-burning fireplace, pool table and shuffleboard for après-ride evenings.

Wreck Cove hugs the Atlantic coastline, and these cabins sit right across the road from groomed snowmobile trails. Expect wood stoves (with wood and kindling supplied in winter), full kitchens and ocean views. Pets are welcome, and snowshoes are free for guests, so you can explore the 28-acre property on your rest day.

Inverary is a one-stop shop. It's a full-service, year-round resort with an indoor pool, hot tub, sauna and spa for sore muscles, plus The Narrows Café & Pub and the Lakeside Restaurant for a hot meal. It's a few kilometres from the trails out of Baddeck and close to guided tours on Hunter's Mountain.

The panoramic views don't have to end when you park the sled. Set on 14 acres of Frasers' Mountain in Margaree Valley, these year-round chalets look out over the valley below. Each has a large veranda, full kitchen, electric fireplace, smart TV, Wi-Fi and a fire pit, and dogs are welcome.

Ideally placed near Baddeck's snowmobile trails, this motel is a great base for a weekend in the Highlands. Choose from motel units or chalets overlooking the Bras d'Or Lake, and watch the sun come up over the water before you hit the trails. There's a licensed dining room on site, and pets are welcome.

These three lighthouse-themed cottages in the village of Baddeck are built for touring couples. Two of them have a ground-floor garage for your snowmobile, with a sink and counter for cleaning your gear. Upstairs, wraparound windows look out over Baddeck Bay, and the village's restaurants and cafés are a short walk away.

About five minutes from the village of Baddeck, these cottages are a favourite with riders. Snowmobile trails are close by, and in winter the property grooms its own snow trails, with snowshoes for guests. Some cottages are pet friendly (Cameron House isn't), and the fire pit is the perfect end to a cold day.

Ready to trade the Highlands for the coast? Add a few days on Cape Breton's South Coast at this 17-room boutique hotel in Arichat, on Isle Madame. It's a quiet, Acadian corner of the Island, with wintry harbour views from the veranda, a light breakfast to start the day and local staff who know the best bakery and the best sunset spots around.

With this many trails, a weekend only scratches the surface, so add a day or two and try a second home base on the other side of the Highlands. Time your trip for February and you can join Festival Chocolat Chaud (February 12–14) for sleigh rides, fireside storytelling and lots of hot chocolate around Chéticamp, or keep an eye on our events calendar for the Warm Your Bones Festival in Sydney (2027 dates to be announced).
