Nicolas Denys Days is an annual festival that strives to provide visitors to Cape Breton Island with an authentic Island experience. This year’s festival will run from August 1st – August 7th. The many events planned for the week are hosted by various organizations to ensure that the whole community benefits from and participates actively in the festival. As a visitor to the area, this approach gives you an opportunity to “get to know” our whole community and join in the fun all week long! Turning the Tides
At the St. Peter’s Canal National Historic Site, visitors can take a scenic walk along the 800-meter long canal and watch as boats transit its unique double-gated tidal lock. The welcoming staff will enlighten you as they present the history of the canal and explain the workings of the tidal lock and swing bridge. Enjoy a day of fishing off the canal walls or walk across the lock gates for an afternoon hike in the adjacent Battery Park or the nearby coastal trail.

Come on out and Join the FUN – all you need is your sneakers, water bottle and the urge to dance! Ages 12 years and up. Licensed instructor, Louise Dixon.

Literacy Network Day Camp
The Richmond County Literacy Network is hosting a day camp for children ages 7-12. Join us for crafts, board games, iPad games and minute-to-win-it games.
Location: St. Peter’s Learning & Technology Centre

Time: 10am-12noon

IWK Hawaiian Run/Walk & BBQ
Come dressed in your Hawaiian best and enjoy a BBQ, music, snow cones, cotton candy and popcorn and get some exercise walking/running around the track then finish with an outdoor Zumba dance party. All money goes to the IWK so please come out and show your support! Sponsored by the Municipality of Richmond. Contact Shanna for more info or a pledge sheet (902-535-2987)

Wednesday Night Sailboat Race
Hosted by the Wallace MacAskill Yacht Club, this is a fun summer race series on the lake side of the canal in Jackson Bay. Boats sometimes need crew, show up at the Marina by 5:00 pm and check with boats that are preparing to race, if you have some experience. You can also call Gordon at 902-631-3754 and he will attempt to find you a spot on a boat. After the race there is a gathering at the Bras d’Or Lakes Inn to review the results.

Swim the Canal – Jerome Point Light Fundraiser
Hosted by The Village on the Canal Association, our second annual “Swim the Canal” event revives a community tradition in a fun and safe way! There are 2 swim options through the locks and all swimmers will be awarded a t-shirt to acknowledge their accomplishment. This event will bring people together through a fun and nostalgic community activity, reviving what was once a rite of passage! Be one of the first in the world to swim the length of a canal for three straight years or do it yourself for the first time.
