Hawthorn Eco Retreat
Margarees
About
Tucked away against the Margaree River, Hawthorn Eco Retreat offers a soulful, “back-to-basics” wilderness getaway on Cape Breton Island. Built around the principles of permaculture, earth care, and intentional hospitality, Hawthorn is a low-impact forest sanctuary designed for those who love the idea of camping but crave a genuine twist of comfort and design.
Our retreat features a diverse, growing collection of thoughtfully curated off-grid accommodations tailored to let the outdoors in. Guests can choose from our cozy pine bunkies, or stay in our unique 19-foot diameter yurt (available July and August only). Designed to invite the shifting forest light and the quiet sounds of nature, our spaces offer an authentic slow-living experience that leaves a minimal footprint on the land. Depending on the dwelling, features include comfortable bedding, private decks, outdoor cooking setups, and efficient heating (bunkies only) for cool Cape Breton nights. We are in intentional, slow development, meaning guests enjoy a shared bathroom facility with an incineration toilet, with no shower or on-site water infrastructure at this time.
Beyond individual escapes and creative resets for couples or solo travelers, this diverse layout makes Hawthorn an inspiring backdrop for intentional group gatherings. With multiple distinct structures and room for future expansion, the setting provides a peaceful environment with quick access to amenities including the Dancing Goat Cafe, perfectly suited for small group retreats, collaborative team workshops, or wellness gatherings looking to realign away from daily distractions.
Whether you are using our retreat as a basecamp to explore the historic Margaree River valley and the nearby Cabot Trail, or gathering a small team to create and collaborate in nature, Hawthorn Eco Retreat is a place to slow down, unplug, and sleep immersed in the wilderness.
Stays and group bookings are by advance reservation only.
