Cabot Trail

If you didn’t believe in magic before now, you will be converted. Warning: unparalleled beauty ahead; your eyes may not be big enough to take it all in. But your heart will.

The Cabot Trail includes Cape Breton Island National Park, and is unquestionably one of the most scenic drives on the planet. But it’s much more than a drive. To truly experience the splendour of it all, you’ll need to venture off the main road onto spectacular hiking trails, and off the beaten track into colourful fishing villages that hug the coast.

Soak in the scenery and the lifestyle. Look. Listen. And be transformed.

It's been said about Cape Breton that if you shake a bush a fiddler falls out — and a step dancer is never far behind. Along the Ceilidh Trail, Scottish music floats like notes in the air. It seeps into your bones. It might even be in the water, and, like a magical potion, becomes infectious.

No wonder this coast is considered "Canada’s Musical Coast." But there’s so much more, including the Cabot Links — one of the highest-rated golf courses in the world. Here, you will tune into the very origins of the sport, and the culture that spawned it. Bonus: the sunsets on this coast are spellbinding.

Bras D'or Lake scenic drive

Although called a lake, this is really Canada’s inland sea — a large body of saltwater surrounded by stunning landscapes. It’s not only a mecca for sailors and a paddler’s paradise, it’s also a UNESCO designated Biosphere Reserve.

Renowned author Silver Donald Cameron describes the Bras d’Or as "A basin ringed by indigo hills laced with marble. Islands within a sea inside an island." Landlubbers can circumnavigate the massive lake by car. Poking around is encouraged.

It's easy to see why Alexander Graham Bell — teacher, inventor, and humanitarian — fell in love with the region. The Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site in Baddeck celebrates his life’s work — and more.

The French founded Louisbourg on this coast in 1713. Today, Fortress Louisbourg is the largest historical reconstruction project in North America. You’ll meet costumed interpreters re-enacting life as it was in the 18th century. So step into a time warp and enjoy a soul stirring, epic experience.

Further south is another treasure, St. Peter’s Canal—a National Historic Site with a working tidal lock system. Less than half an hour away, cross over into Isle Madame — and discover a rich Acadian culture and lively fishing communities. There’s a palpable joie de vivre here along with hidden gems such as secluded beaches and great surfing.

Marconi Trail - Metro Cape Breton

Marconi Trail

Named for Guglielmo Marconi who successfully sent radio waves from this rugged coastline across the Atlantic, this region is also where miners mined coal under the sea. Their stories are legendary, and live on in the Cape Breton Miners' Museum. An underground tour of the Ocean Deeps Colliery with a retired miner will give you a glimpse of an extraordinary lifestyle.

From bird watching over the cliffs, and walking barefoot in the sand at Port Morien Beach, to stumbling upon some amazing artists in their studios, this region is full of delightful surprises. And don’t miss getting your photo taken with the world’s largest fiddle!
