Skyline Trail 101
Perched high above the Cabot Trail, the Skyline Trail offers a view that feels like the edge of the world–where the mountains meet the sea and the sky stretches endlessly. It is without a doubt a must-see destination, but as social media fuels the desire to capture its beauty, the growing crowds are making it harder to experience it firsthand.

PLEASE NOTE: Skyline Trail closures and access restrictions as of July 23rd, 2025
For your safety and to protect the environment, please be advised of the following rules and enforcement measures in place at the Skyline Trail during peak season:
- The Skyline Trail and its parking lot frequently close between 9:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. due to high visitation. Closures occur when both the trail and parking lot reach full capacity.
- When the parking lot is closed, the trail is not accessible. Visitors must make an alternate plan.
- Pedestrian access to the trailhead is strictly prohibited. You may not walk to the Skyline Trailhead from elsewhere.
- No drop-offs or walk-ins are allowed from the roadside.
- Pedestrian use is prohibited on the Cabot Trail between 19713 Cabot Trail (French Lake Look-Off) and 18865 Cabot Trail (Veteran’s Monument Look-Off).
- Stopping or parking along the Cabot Trail shoulder is illegal and unsafe.
- Do not use nearby parking lots, emergency shelters, or road shoulders to access the Skyline Trail.
Violating these regulations can result in fines ranging from $180 up to $25,000. These measures are in place to protect visitors, wildlife, and fragile ecosystems.
We ask all visitors to plan ahead, respect closures, and choose alternative trails when the Skyline Trail is at capacity. Your cooperation helps ensure a safer and more sustainable park experience for everyone.
Staying on the Boardwalk
The Skyline Trail’s fragile ecosystem is at risk; heavy foot traffic, off-trail wandering and an overabundance of moose have been reshaping this landscape. To protect this breathtaking place, we must tread lightly. Visit during blue and golden hours, or better yet, join a Parks Canada-guided Skyline Sunset Hike to witness the trail’s magic while learning how to protect it for generations to come.

Skyline throughout the seasons

Spring: As the Highlands awaken, the Skyline Trail comes to life with crisp air, budding greenery and fewer crowds. However, snow may still linger on the plateau, so be prepared for all weather conditions. Expect cool temperatures, occasional muddy patches and wildlife emerging from the forest. Layers and sturdy footwear are essential!
Summer: Long days bring warm breezes and breathtaking sunsets over the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The boardwalk lookout is a prime spot for whale watching but be prepared for busy trails—especially between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. The parking lot often reaches capacity and holiday weekends are the busiest. Temporary closures may occur, so plan ahead and consider visiting early or late in the day for a quieter experience. When the parking lot reaches capacity, temporary closures will be in place for approximately three hours to manage traffic and maintain safety. During these closures, stopping along the Cabot Trail is not permitted for safety reasons.
Fall: Cooler air makes for perfect hiking weather, and wildlife sightings are common. However, expect heavy crowds, particularly between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., with holiday weekends being the busiest. Parking often fills up and temporary closures are possible. When the parking lot reaches capacity, temporary closures will be in place for approximately three hours to manage traffic and maintain safety. Dress in layers and enjoy nature’s grand finale before winter sets in.
Winter: With the arrival of winter, Skyline Trail transforms into a serene, snow-covered wonderland. Snowshoes or crampons are essential and strong winds can make conditions unpredictable. To protect fragile ecosystems, visitors must remain on the boardwalk at all times. If you're unfamiliar with the trail, a GPS is highly recommended. Keep in mind that the parking lot will not be plowed so be prepared to park further away and add extra distance to your hike. For those ready to embrace the elements the reward is absolute tranquillity and breathtaking winter vistas.
For your safety, please be aware that visitor services are unavailable from November to mid-May in Cape Breton Highlands National Park. Winter conditions can be unpredictable—plan ahead, dress appropriately and be prepared to navigate the park at your own risk.

Frequently asked questions (Skyline Trail FAQ)
- What time of year is the busiest time to visit the Skyline Trail?
Summer is the busiest season, with over 1,000 visitors per day to the trail alone. Weather is favourable in the summer and the Cabot Trail is lively with tourists and small businesses making it a popular time to explore. Autumn brings an influx of visitors as well and Thanksgiving weekend is the second busiest time to visit the Skyline Trail. - When is the best time to avoid crowds?
The shoulder season, from late October to May, sees far fewer visitors. If you prefer a quieter experience, this is the best time to visit. - Can I hike the Skyline Trail in winter?
Yes, but expect to encounter very few hikers. If visiting in winter, be sure to dress appropriately for the weather and changing trail conditions. Expect to add distance to your hike throughout the winter months as the parking lot is not plowed. - Why do I have to stay on the boardwalk?
The boardwalk is there to protect both visitors and the fragile ecosystem. Social trails have caused damage to rare plant life and wildlife habitats. Staying on the boardwalk ensures both your safety and the conservation of this special area. - What happens if I go off the boardwalk?
Entering restricted areas can result in a fine. Even if a trail looks tempting, please resist the urge to explore off the designated path to help protect the environment and avoid penalties. - What kind of rare plant life is found here?
Bearberries are an example of rare plants growing near the Skyline. This is one of only two places in the entire park where they can be found. - Is anything being done to restore the ecosystem?
Yes! Tree planting has started as part of an ecological restoration project. More restoration work will continue this spring making it even more important to stay on the boardwalk and allow nature to recover. - Are there other trails I can explore?
Absolutely! While the Skyline Trail is iconic, Cape Breton Highlands National Park has 25 other breathtaking trails to discover. Consider exploring a “trail less travelled” and share your experience with others! If you are looking for a trail close by, check out: Acadian, Bog, Benjie’s Lake, or a more challenging trail, Fishing Cove. - How long will I have to wait if the Skyline Trail is closed?
Closures typically last three to four hours. For safety reasons, visitors cannot wait in their vehicles at the parking lot entrance, the emergency shelter parking lot or along the shoulder of the Cabot Trail. Please plan accordingly.
