In 1991, the world of popular music changed forever with the release of Nirvana’s Nevermind which brought alternative and punk music to the mainstream and made “Grunge” a household word. Led by visionary songwriter Kurt Cobain, along with bassist Krist Novoselic and future Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl on drums, Nirvana’s meteoric rise was nothing but extraordinary. However, not all that glitters is gold and in April of 1994, the world lost Kurt…and Nirvana was no more.
Seven months following Cobain’s death, a generation left behind received what many consider to be his last goodbye with the release of the now classic live album Nirvana: Unplugged In New York, a collection of the band’s classic songs and eclectic covers which had been recorded as part of MTV’s “Unplugged” series. Featuring Nirvana hits such as “Come As You Are” and “Something In The Way” as well as David Bowie’s “The Man Who Sold The World” and of course, a haunting rendition of Ledbelly’s “Where Did You Sleep Last Night”, this seminal live record proved once and for all the depths of Cobain’s songwriting, fraught with a brutal honesty and vulnerability rarely seen in the rock landscape.
Now, we celebrate this landmark performance with “Where Did You Sleep Last Night: A Tribute To Nirvana Unplugged In New York” featuring some of Cape Breton’s finest including Robbie Simms (vocals/guitar), Bill Potter (guitar) Shane O’Handley (bass/accordion), and Thomas Allen (drums/vocals). Joining these lifelong friends and Nirvana aficionados who all cut their musical teeth on the Seattle sound is the multi-talented Jennie McKibbon on cello.
Don’t miss this truly authentic experience as the band channels their inner Nirvana to bring you note for note, and word for word, what may be the most beloved live performance of the ’90s. The performance will be roughly 90 minutes without an intermission and is recommended for ages 10+.
