Music Camp on the Canal is a weekend of workshops, sociable jam sessions, an All Star concert, and some tasty dining. The workshop programs introduce tunes and techniques, and teach beginning and intermediate students how to get the most from ongoing learning and practice. A goal for the overall program is to help cross-pollinate our Cape Breton celtic influences with other traditions, and to broaden our respective appreciation, skills and knowledge as musicians and listeners. In the process, new and interesting fusions are created. A select group of Cape Breton’s finest musicians will teach small groups in singing, fiddle, guitar, slide guitar, bass, mandolin, tenor banjo, tinwhistle, bodhran, instrument care, and square dancing, Teachers include Roger Stone, Allie Bennett, Dwayne Cote, John Campbelljohn, Darren McMullen, Paul Davis, Barbara White, Johannes Sturm, and Roddie’s Square Dance Society. If you can play at least a few tunes by ear, you’ll be in good company for a rich weekend of hands-on musical experiences. Absolute novices can learn a how to dance a traditional square set, or take an introductory tin-whistle class.
