From lobster to snow crab and mussels to oysters, youll connect with locals and their active fisheries on this half day cycling tour, while enjoying incredible coastal views of the Northern Cape Breton highlands.
Peddle along the level, coastal roadways of Aspy Bay, while getting an insider look at the areas active fisheries from your local guide. The different fishing techniques and gear are explained as you cycle along the beaches and quaint fishing harbours. The tour includes lots of breaks, so you can soak up the scenery, take pictures, and get hands-on interpretation of the fishing gear youre seeing along the shores. Depending on the fishing season, there may be opportunities to watch the local fleet unload their catch and connect with local fishermen, or get first-hand knowledge of the fishery from your fisherman tour guide.
The tour also includes a stop at St. Paul Island Lighthouse and Museum, which is often a favourite. Climb the stairs of the oldest cast iron lighthouse in Canada to get a view of the harbor and surrounding highlands, while hearing stories of your guides family who were light keepers at the original island site. Youll also hear stories of shipwrecks along the coast, and get to see some recovered treasures.
A fisheries tour would not be complete without trying some of the succulent local seafood! So, youll finish your ride at the local oyster market to try some Aspy Bay Oysters. These oysters are served at many restaurants along the Cabot Trail, as well as in downtown Toronto restaurants, but while in Aspy Bay, you must get them right from the oyster farmers themselves! The farmers will also give you the inside scoop of the whys and hows of oyster farming.
