Refresh, relax and reconnect with nature at Iron Mountain Wilderness Cabins. Located on Whycocomagh Mountain in the central Cape Breton Island highlands, we invite you to break away from the crowds and gain a new perspective from our brand new off-grid camping cabin facility. We are less than 5km from the TransCanada Highway 105 in Whycocomagh, NS.

We offer 5 heated, year-round insulated cabins available for nightly rentals. Each cabin includes:

  • 1 queen bed with 2 pillows,
  • 2 twin bunk beds with a pillow each,
  • a dinette table with seating for four,
  • a stainless steel food prep table,
  • solar LED lighting and charging station,
  • a Weber pro series Genesis II BBQ grill with side burner and cooking light,
  • 2 deck chairs and table,
  • a picnic table, and
  • a fire pit.

In the adjacent lodge you’ll find male and female flush toilets, showers and sinks. Our lodge also has a common lounge, wash-up station and licensed bar, serving four premium Nova Scotia craft beer on tap – we are Nova Scotia’s first guests-only off-grid pub! Our lodge is serviced with electricity and water thanks to our solar system and back-up generator.

We are located on The Trans Canada Trail and the Snowmobile Association of Nova Scotia’s 104 Cape Clear Trail. Two trails cross on our 200 acres wilderness property. You can venture off on foot, bike, ATV, snowshoes, cross country skis, or over-landing vehicle across the Keppoch Plateau, where two protected wilderness areas meet, or down The Great Trail to Whycocomagh Bay, or Lake Ainslie or across the mountain sides to Port Hood, Inverness, Margaree and right on up to the majestic Cape Breton Highlands and Cape Clear look-off.

On site, you will enjoy mountain views across the Bras d’Or Lake and Denys Basin, where you can see the mainland of Nova Scotia in the far distance. Birders will adore the avian residents and visitors found at our wilderness location. Wildlife photographers may have luck capturing on film the local fox, lynx, bobcat, bear, moose, dear, and other wildlife that shares the mountainside with us.

Try blacksmithing at our local forge – for an hour or several days!

If the beach is on your agenda, excellent swimming can be found locally at Marble Mountain, Lake Ainslie, West Mabou, Port Hood, and Inverness, where you can also find world class golfing and delicious seafood to bring home to the mountain for a meal.

For history lovers, there are museums and historic sites to visit nearby in Baddeck, Iona, St.Anns, Lake Ainslie, and Orangedale.

For music lovers, we are within a short drive to Cape Breton’s Musical Coast and guests will have a ball joining in the regular ceilidhs held in Brook Village, Judique, Baddeck and Glencoe or the local open music night at the Waterfront Centre in Whycocomagh.

You can also learn about Cape Breton Island’s rich indigenous culture while staying with us. The Skye River Trail in Whycocomagh has learning opportunities as does Eskasoni.

As we are centrally located on the island, amazing day trips can be arranged to places such as the Skyline Trail & Cape Breton Highlands National Park, The Cabot Trail, St.Peter’s Canal, Cheticamp, Margaree, Inverness, Bay St. Lawrence, Ingonish, St.Anns Bay, & Baddeck for whale watching, paddle boarding, tubing, hiking, horseback riding, hiking, learning and more!

We’d be happy to help our guests connect with locals who are passionate about what they do – from fly fishing to snowmobiling to massage therapy – just let us know how we can help make your visit a dream vacation!
