Overview
Travel clockwise around the Cabot Trail on this four-day active winter package that provides a fun adventure and amazing scenery. The experience of staying at Highlands Hostel is like no other! This “former-church-turned-hostel” has enough space to ensure guests can maintain their own “bubble” and is next to the North Highlands Nordic Trail – perfect for cross country skiing and central for all kinds of winter activities. This package includes a 2 night at Highlands Hostel, 1 night at Wreck Cove Wilderness Cabins or similar (each based on double occupancy), a self-guided snowshoe experience with the use of snowshoes, and a self-guided XC Ski including equipment rental. This package costs $409.
Day 1
Arrive in Cape North
Travel to Cheticamp, stopping for lunch at a local restaurant before continuing through Pleasant Bay. Stop along the way at some of the many viewpoints for stunning winter scenery. Watch for moose while travelling through the area and take care of driving over the steep and windy road as you cross North Mountain. After checking in at Highlands Hostel, check out the Cabot Trail Food Market where you can stock up on snacks and supplies for your staycation!
Day 2
North Highlands Nordic Trail
Pick up your skis at the North Highlands Nordic Ski Club and head out on the 11 km groomed trail. The Ski Club is run by a community group of volunteers who maintain groomed trails and supply XC ski and snowshoes.
After an enjoyable time at the Nordic trails, hike back to the Church for a roaring fire and hot beverage to warm you up. Make your evening meal at the hostel, or, pick up some piping hot food at the Cabot Trail Food Market. Enjoy some music, play some board games, enjoy good company, and prepare for your next day’s adventures.
Day 3
Wreck Cove Wilderness Adventure
Leaving Cape North, continue toward Ingonish taking in the breathtaking winter scenery along the way. If you have some time, drive up to The Keltic Lodge to get the views of both the North and South Bays of Ingonish. Stop in for essentials at Doucette’s Market before continuing to Wreck Cove.
Once you settle in at Wreck Cove Wilderness Cabins, get into your snowshoes and explore the trails on the property and take in the perfect views of nearby Cape Smokey. After the day’s activities, load up the wood stove and prepare your evening meal in your cozy cabin.
Day 4
Heading home
This marks the end of your Cabot Trail staycation. If you have the time, explore the trails one last time before safely travelling home.
